Mix your patterns successfully by Kim Watson

Do you ever open your MONTHLY box of Hip Kit deliciousness & feel completely overwhelmed by the gorgeous color & mix of PATTERNS? Causing you to say, “Where to now??”. Well, today I am setting you a CHALLENGE:

“Join me in the Big Pattern Palooza!”

Believe it or not, I have been there many a time, sitting on the floor of my craft room, surrounded by gorgeous paper but with a question mark over my head. So for today’s project I decided to include a few TIPS on how to deal with patterns & successfully mix them.

Oh before I carry on…aren’t the August 2016 kits DIVINE!!

Laugh & Love this Life by Kim Watson

KimWatson+Laugh & Love this life+HKC01

If you have decided to use only patterned paper on your project and NO cardstock, here are some points to consider:

  • One needs to firstly make sure their dominant colors coordinate together
  • Make sure that no single pattern dominates the other
  • Does the underlying vibe of each pattern work together e.g: A clean graphic patterns wouldn’t work here
  • If layered will your pattern choices live together?
  • Decide on your page design up front, making sure to select enough patterns to complete the layout successfully

You will notice that I used the yellow scalloped paper as the dominant pattern. Laying it slightly off center, it grounds the layout, allowing all the other elements to either run parallel to it or flow from it.  It also acts as a mat for the main photograph, drawing one’s’ eye towards it. Yellow will forever be my best friend when it comes to paper crafting.

KimWatson+Laugh & Love this life+HKC02

This little cluster includes yet another pattern, the plus sign tag from Claudia van Rooijen’s ephemera pack. The fact that is has a muted, black, watercolor finish, makes it live with the all other patterns perfectly. A little blended area of blue color under the tag on the left & under the diecut on the right, using the Prima Marketing Pastels, is a great way to tie both sides of the page together; as does the bird sticker & gold wire bow, they help complete visual triangles elsewhere in the page.

KimWatson+Laugh & Love this life+HKC03

This cluster has a dominant red flower. Not only does it act as a visual anchor for the photograph, but is makes up one of the three red accents, part of a visual triangle. As busy as this cluster is, because the colors are of a similar tone with pops of black thrown in, everything blends beautifully together.

KimWatson+Laugh & Love this life+HKC04

KimWatson+Laugh & Love this life+HKC05

The yellow, being light enough, is also a great place to hand write journaling. To avoid it getting lost within the pattern, I used a Dear Lizzy, clear sticker as a secondary title to act like a header. Now your eye reads the text as a single cluster.

Before I go…I have another project I’d like to share with you. It was one of the last projects I made using the July 2016 kits, but it is also a great example of how to put your patterns to good use.

The Good Life by Kim Watson

kimwatsongoodlifehkc01

Can you believe I used x7 different patterns for this page? Why do they all work together you might ask…? I put it down to the white balance 🙂 The balance between white, black & solid color being in harmony. The patterns are graphic in feel but the playful treatment of the embellishments, helps the tone down the harshness of the black.

kimwatsongoodlifehkc02

Even something as simple as a strip or two of vellum can do well to knock back patterns that might be too bold in areas.

kimwatsongoodlifehkc03

Machine stitching is a good & subtle way to create a visual divide between patterns…even though really understated, the rows of stitching tell your brain to pause.

kimwatsongoodlifehkc04

I really hope you have found this helpful to dispel any apprehension you might have when faced with a box full of patterns. Patterns are fun & add life to any project. I challenge you to be brave & try mixing some patterns you might not ordinarily have done so before. If you choose to participate in the challenge…please be sure to post your project in the Hip Kit Members forum on FB or on Instagram & tag it with this hashtag: ‘patternpalooza’ so we can leave you some love.

Thanks for stopping by!!

Good life | Anna Komenda

Hello everyone. It’s Anna here with my last inspiration created with July 2016 Hip Kits. I have a layout and a card for You. They are both filled with exclusive items designed by Kim Watson.

I created my layout using a lot of fussy cutted flowers. I acually cut whole paper to get all the flowers I could. I chose one of the papers from the Main Kit called “Crazy daisy”. The flowers have this artsy touch. I used them to create a frame around my picture.

Untitled

Frame created with flowers is quite busy so I needed come calm patterns for my background. I combined Illustrated Faith paper with another exclusive one designed by Kim. I used a lot of 3D foam squares to layer the flowers and other elements.

DSC_1794

My title is created with words from exclusive ephemera pack designed by Kim Watson. You can find one in Main Kit and one with the words in Embellishment Kit.

DSC_1796DSC_1798

I finished my composition with wood veneers form Fancy Free collection, some exclusive flair button and few little chipboard stickers from Becky Higgins. You can find them in Project Life Kit.

My second project for today is a card. I thought that it would be fun to create one using exclusive washi tape sheet from Project Life Kit to add a colors and patterns.

I also had few flowers left after I made my layout. I added them in three spots along with an exclusive puffy sticker from Embellishment Kit. And the bonus is that I used the rest of washi so no waste of precious embellies 😀

That’s all for today. I will be back to You next friday on Facebook.

Thank You for stopping by.

Embrace your inner artist!

I have a question…”Do you feel like getting messy?”. Today my answer was….yes! And this page was the result! Yeah!

Memories by Kim Watson

KimWatson+Memories+HKC01

Inspired by one of the July 2016 PL kit journal cards, I decided to tap into my inner artist! The mist & paints from the July 2016 Color kit  & triangle stencil from the June 2016 Color kit were perfect to achieve the look I saw in my head.

KimWatson+Memories+HKC02

Using an old credit card, I first gessoed the background. Once dry I used the same credit card & applied teal paint. After that I added lime Shimmerz mist & yellow paint, creating an artsy, blended & layered look. Orange ink, applied with a sponge through the June stencil left a scattering of triangles around the page…just GORGEOUS!!

KimWatson+Memories+HKC03

Layers really help this page look amazing. I used paper pieces & journal cards to do this. Ephemera die cuts & puffy stickers make the cutest photo corner & little Lawn Fawn silver plusses added understanded twinkle.

KimWatson+Memories+HKC04

KimWatson+Memories+HKC05

The Bella Boulevarde die-cut chipboard title looked too white on the page, so I painted it too. A little Shimmerz yellow with water was a simple way to ombre the title with fabulous results!

KimWatson+Memories+HKC06

When adding my photo, I tried a double exposure effect by printing x2 of the same image & offsetting it slightly. It really works with the trendy vibe of the page.

I sure hope you like this layout as much as I do…I urge you to crack open your color kit & get messy, you might be pleasantly surprised with the results, just like I was .

Explore | Tarrah McLean

Hi everyone!

It’s Tarrah back with you today to share my last layout using the July 2016 Main and Add-On Hip Kit Club kits! My August kits finally arrived this morning just in time for the weekend!

Explore

I love a good sunburst design so I pulled out the Simple Stories Sunshine and Happiness paper and used it for the top half of my layout. I added some of the blue from the blue ombre paper designed by Kim Watson to the middle part and then used the light Kraft from the July 2016 cardstock add-on kit….this way it replicated the sun, water and sand…just like at the beach!  and so I decided to draw the eye in by adding some of the exclusive word and phrase stickers to some of the rays of the sun paper.

IMG_1619

My theme for this week is to focus on stickers, I decided to draw the eye in by adding some of the exclusive word and phrase stickers to some of the rays of the sun paper. I thought this was a cool way to use up some of those small little bits and pieces we have laying around in our kits!

Explore Detail 3

This photo was the perfect colours to document using these products as the clothes my son is wearing, match the colours in the kit perfectly! I backed the photo with one of the exclusive project life cards from the July 2016 Project Life kit and layered some other pieces of exclusive ephemera also.

Explore Detail 2

Adding the large embellishments like the Pink Paislee/Paige Evans Fancy Free wood pieces tied everything together across my layout. I am super happy with how this turned out…why not give your next layout a try using the sunburst paper up the top?!

Thanks so much for joining me on the Hip Kit Club blog today!

See you next week! Happy creating!

Love You | Raquel Bowman

Hey everyone, Raquel here today with a new layout featuring the July kits. My post for today has a focus on ephemera. So today I am going to share a little tip with you on how I  create my own ephemera using the Project Life kits.

But first, to create this layout I have used the August sketch and August cut files.

Here is the sketch:

August 2016 Sketch

I just loved the design of the  sketch this month. The diagonal, the banners and central positioning of everything is just such a nice design that I was itching to create a layout using it. The photo I am documenting is one of my little man who has a recent obsession with my iPad. It has become a daily struggle with my son and daughter who gets to play the iPad. We have a rule that my daughter gets to play it when my son has his afternoon nap and my son gets to play it in the evening after his nap. I wanted to document how he enjoys playing it and the battles we have on this layout. loveyou-jack-logo

As I mentioned earlier my theme for today is all about ephemera. I get the Project Life kit each month and because I don’t project life as such I challenge myself to use the cards in some way. On this layout I decided to cut out and make my own ephemera from the 3×4″ cards which I will explain in more detail below. loveyou-jack-desk

In the cluster to the left of the photo is a globe. The globe was cut from one of the cards and adhered to the page with a foam adhesive. I finished the globe with the captured tag from the ephemera pack. I also cut a heart from one of the August cut files and one of the exclusive papers to use as a layer in the cluster.

loveyou-jack-1

The love you was cut from some black card stock in my stash and an August cut file too. I love the contrast of black on this page with the soft blue and pops of yellow. loveyou-jack-2

The Becky Higgins chipboard coordinated well with the colours in this layout too. I added a puffy arrow to direct your attention to the typed strip journalling. loveyou-jack-3

The floral die cut was also cut from one of the exclusive papers. I am not afraid to add florals to a boy page. I think this cut file still compliments the page well and I love how it looks. I added a touch of texture to the page using the Color kit stencil and some Faber Castell whipped spackle. The yellow heart is also a cut file which I have added some stitching through the middle. loveyou-jack-4

The hello good times tab was actually on one of the 3×4 cards too.  I used my We R Memory Keepers tab punch to punch it out. I must remember to keep that punch out on my desk as it was a quick and easy way to customise an embellishment for my layout. loveyou-jack-5The photo was added to the page with a foam sheet to add dimension also. loveyou-jack-6

Using a similar design to the sketch I also created a card using my scraps from the layout. I used a die cut heart and a couple of the exclusive puffy stickers too. So fun and a nice eye catching design. hellocard

Thanks for stopping by the blog today. Did you see the release of the September kits? I think they have to be my favourite kits ever! Cannot wait to play with them. Be sure to check them out in the store if you haven’t seen them yet. Raquel Bowman

OH what FUN – BEA Valint

Hey, friends! BEA back with you today, and I have a new layout featuring the 2016 July Hip Kits! The moment I opened my July kit, I knew one of my layout I wanted to make would be on this gorgeous Sunset Blush paper! I just adore that gradient so much, it gets me a sweet summet feeling!

adventureboat

For this week my brief was ‘Supersize it’, so I started my layout with stitching a big boat in the middle of the page. My sons love sailing and every sea sports. They spended all our summer vacation on the board! I filled the stitching with the dotted Fancy Free patterned paper. I could use differents sizes of the paper for the sails and for the boat.

untitled-0051

I created a cluster to the left of the page. To do this I combined a HKC exclusive ephemeras with puffy stickers and Bella Blv. Chipboards. Just perfect!

untitled-0053

My second project is a card I created from the beautiful ‘Painted Dreams’ exclusive patterned paper.  I decided to cut some hearts out of the paper randomly, and look, how beautiful are they!!! Once I cut them out, I arranged them in the middle of my card and sew on a piece of wellum. I add my title by using the shiny AC glitter stickers. I just love how it turned out!

Title love | FLORA MONIKA FARKAS

Hi Girls! It’s Flóra here with a new layout. Today I focus on titles. I used almost all the Bella Blvd. – Chipboard Words from July Main Kit on the left side of my layout. On the right side of the page I used the Pink Paislee – Fancy Free – Paper 04 and lots of embellishments.

So happy together | Anna Komenda

Hello Hip Kit fans. It’s Anna here with some new layout created with July 2016 Hip Kits.

First I want to tell You a little about what I do when my mojo is low. It’s one of my few methods and it can be used with kits or paper collections. I just pick one or two colors that are present in the kit / collection and I choose every single element that fits my color scheme. I run through papers, ephemera packs, stickers and I group everything in one place.

1

This is what I did with July kits. First – I chose this gorgeous ombre blue exclusive paper designed by Kim Watson. I really liked it and wanted to use but I didn’t have any particular plan. I checked exclusive ephemeras pack from Main Kit and Embellishment Kit looking for some blue / white elements. I put them in one place. Later I decided that I will add a little bit of silver by using Freckled Fawn puffy metallic stickers.

DSC_1643

When I decided of a color palette I walked through my printed photos (I always print more pictures to use in future projects) I chose two that matched my paper. White Bella Blvd. chipboard stickers were also a perfect match with my photos and other stuff.

DSC_1650

I wanted to add some subtile detail to the background so I took a vellum sheet from Cardstock Kit and cut heart background using  July “I heart this” cut file designed by Ashley Horton. Teal glitter was some stronger, eye catching accent that I decided to add too. “Fancy free” wooden elements were covered with teal glitter so I used them in my composition.

DSC_1651

Project Life “High five” little chipboards were like cherry on the top for my layout. You can find them in Project Life Kit.

And that’s all. Really fast and simple, even when Your mojo is low. I encourage You to try this “go monochromatic” method to high up You mojo and strech Your kits.

Explore Madeira by Kim Watson

My first page using the AMAZING July 2016 Main and Add-On kits!! I have to say I feel blessed & honored that Kimberly selected my collection,‘The Happy Life’ for this month’s kits. Everything turned out better than I could ever have expected! You can imagine the sheer insanity that went down when I opened my box…the colors, patterns & fun elements had me wanting to rip open packets & start scrapping immediately!!

Explore Madeira by Kim Watson

I love how the colors really speak of summer…& the sophisticated patterns remind me of art class. On their own, the painted paper would have been too much for my page design, but I was determined to use it on this layout. The trick was to cut it down to bite size pieces, then creating easy layers, allowing them to compliment each other. Before I started layering, I used some of the Ranger Dylusions paint to add a little more interest to my background. Make sure to watch my process video on Instagram to see how I did it.

KimWatson+ExploreMadeira+HKC02

2″circles were trimmed slightly & overlapped them stitched onto a patterned strip. The heavy black zigzag stitching formed a visual break between the two busy patterns, allowing them to compliment instead of overwhelm. Don’t you love how the zebra crossing in the photo caused directionality, drawing one’s eye towards the top of the page?

KimWatson+ExploreMadeira+HKC03

The title is a mixture of ephemera pieces & some of the GORGEOUS lime green exclusive puffy sticker alphas. Notice how the flair adds a kind of ‘period’ at the end of the word ‘explore’, finishing off the little cluster nicely.

KimWatson+ExploreMadeira+HKC04

This photo is striking on it’s own, & didn’t need much dressing. A few ephemera (this kits is bursting with different options), chipboard & puffy stickers. (My black pen bombed out whilst I was writing the work sightseeing. Note to self: Never try go over anything a second time…it nearly always looks worse afterwards LOL)

KimWatson+ExploreMadeira+HKC05

I tried something a little differently for my journaling. This time I used an empty frame, allowing the cool paint effect to show through. Narrow journaling strips, allowed me space to saw what I wanted without having to fill the frame.

Well I hope you have found this page inspiring & you are LOVING your July 2016 kits?! Remember to check out our FB page for more inspiration as well as our Members forum on FB. Have yourself a super crafty day further.

Until next time. Bye for now!

Love to make happy memories | Christin Grønnslett

Hello everyone, Christin here today to share with you a new layout with the July 2016 kits. Summer is all about making memories – happy memories and the story of the day is about how we each year pick wild strawberries on a straw along the road at my grandmas house.

christin gronnslett Love to make 001

When I make my backgrounds I always try to pick up exciting things from my photo(s) and this time the black text on the pink jacket was my starting point. Unfortunately I ended up covering most of my background, but you see a lot of pink and yellow mixed with a thich black marker where I made a circle and stripes going out.

christin gronnslett Love to make 002

I also wanted to pick up the word LOVE in my title as you can see a lot of that text in my photo.  I also loved how the darker color in the exclusive papers made by Kim Watson looks like the wild strawberries.   As you can see I pick papers and colors in my background to be combined with the photo.  Since the clothes are very light I had to go for more contrast and more colors to make it pop.  I avoided the background color in my photo for the same reason.   Not intentionally the blue band aid is also picked up in the papers…. My almost 7 year old got run down by a bike on her walk to school and had to get three stitches and have to use a band aid for a long time to keep it out of the sun and she wants fun band aids – here she is using one with a Star Wars theme.

christin gronnslett Love to make 003

For my title I really like to mix and match fonts and die cuts and combine them into a longer title. Of course I should use my own language for the titles – since I am doing all of my journaling in Norwegian, but I also really want to use all the cool stuff with words in the kits.

christin gronnslett Love to make 004

If you look closely you can see that I am somewhat inspired by the August sketch… I  have my title in the lower part of my layers and I have flags out to the left and right instead of them pointing down.
