How to limit your color palette |Kim Watson

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you are feeling like a little early week inspiration to get you in the crafty mood? Today I am going to show you how to limit your color palette with great results.

My page today used the ever versatile February 2017 kits…who would have known bits from this kit could be coordinated to create this gorgeous palette:

Teal, Lime & Yellow

Together by Kim WatsonKimWatson_Together_HKC01 scene

Having pulled out a selection of ephemera by Crate Paper & Little Pink Studio¬†and¬†a vague idea of the type of page layout design¬†I wanted to try, I added watercolor splatters in three areas around the page, creating the perfect canvas on which to layer the other elements. My color choices were inspired by Claudia’s tags & painted flower die cuts, pulling out the teal, lime & acid yellow.

KimWatson_Together_HKC02

Initially I was worried that the pink on the tropical tag would mess with my palette, so covered a few of the pink flowers with blue die cuts. As I progressed with the page I realised a few hints of pink here & there actually¬†added warmth & didn’t¬†distract at all. Don’t you love how the scattered pops of gold & yellow give the page life?

KimWatson_Together_HKC03

The photo, cut into a 2,5″ x3,5″ tag shape, really reinforces my grid design. The straight edges & tweaked width, helps with the overall symmetry and the twine bow adds subtle texture to the top of the page. Following¬†the naturally forming lines, I built my grid design, filling¬†extra¬†spaces with smaller elements. It is a fun way to use up left over embellishments without cluttering the page.

KimWatson_Together_HKC04

As you have probably noticed, I lost my second ‘E’, in the title: ‘Together’ haha! The funny thing is I only noticed it whilst editing my process video, which meant I had to go back & MacGyver an ‘E’ with the space there was AND do it in such a way so it doesn’t look like an obvious mistake. Every time I look at it I can’t help but laugh…it is really a case of not being able to ‘see the wood for the trees’ LOL!!¬†

Anyway..I also wanted to mention a fun way to jazz up your journaling. I bought the February 2017 PL kit, included was the cutest stamp & notelet set from Paige Evans Oh My Heart. I used some of those little stamp prompts within the body of my journaling. Fun idea hey? It not only adds color, but emphasis to important parts of the text too.

KimWatson_Together_HKC05

Lastly, I added a gorgeous butterfly tag & embellished it with a fringed butterfly accent & ephemera from both Maggie Holmes & Paige Evans. The result is a sweet cluster of butterflies & hearts with an appropriate sentiment.

I really hope you have found this inspiring. Limiting your color palette can be a fun way to challenge your creative process. I look forward to seeing your pretty pages in our member gallery on FB. Be sure to let me know when you post them, so I can leave you some crafty love. Have an awesome Monday peeps ~ Kim X

Envelope Pockets & DIY Embellishments

Hello Hip Kits fans! It‚Äôs Zinia here to my last project¬†using the February 2017 Hip Kits. I had so much fun using these kits and I created a bunch of different projects throughout the month but I’m really excited to start playing with the March kits as soon as possible.

Envelope Pockets & DIY Embellishments Using February 2017 Hip Kits @abstractinspiration #ziniaamoiridou #cratepaper #maggieholmes #wrmk #hipkitclub

This layout was pretty hard for me. My first couple of ideas didn’t really work out so it took some time and experimentation to get here. If you are curious about the whole process, you can watch the process video bellow:

I really wanted to use my envelope punch board to create some pockets and fill them with the beautiful Oh my Heart cut apart specialty paper that came in the Paper Ad-on Kit. I measured the cut apart pieces I wanted to use and I created envelops in the closest size. Then I cut off the top flap and turned them into pockets.

The embellishing part was much easier. I went for my go-to embellishment from this month’s kit, the butterflies. I also used a few florals from the Chasing Dreams sticker sheet that came in the Embellishment kit.

I also used the Color Kit to create some DIY embellishments. I mixed the AcriTonez with some heavy gel, spread them through the stencil and fussy cut them to create some lovely geometric hearts.

(During the photoshoot, my little assistant did a thorough check to make sure everything was good)

Before I go, I want to show you some more pages from my traveler’s notebook minibook for February.

February 2017 Traveler's Notebook by Zinia Amoiridou @abstractinspiration

In some spreads I tried to keep things very minimalistic. When there was an item I really loved, I didn’t want to stuff it on a busy page. I preferred using it on a simple spread so that it’s on the spotlight.

February 2017 Traveler's Notebook by Zinia Amoiridou @abstractinspiration

I really tried to implement as much stamping as possible. I really enjoy playing around with stamps in my traveler’s notebooks and this one is not exception. I absolutely adore the Oh my Heart stamp set that came in the Project Life kit.

I also used some interactive elements like this file folder to “hide” a goofy photo of my boyfriend and his valentine’s date.

When I’m working in my traveler’s notebook I always try to use the products that I wouldn’t normally use in my scrapbooking. ¬†For example I don’t often use washi tape and tags on my 12×12 pages, so I made sure to include them in my TN and use them up in my lovely notebook spreads.

So these are my projects for today. I really hope you enjoyed them and you got inspired to create something with your February Hip Kits. Make sure to stop by the HKC Facebook page and the HKC Member Forum for even more inspiration.

Until next time, happy scrappingūüôā

Hello by Nicole Nowosad

Hey everyone! Nicole back on the blog today sharing one last page with the February Hip Kits! I used mainly the Main Kit on this page and challenged myself a little bit with this one.

Hello cl1

Truth is, I am a patterned paper person. I can’t even imagine a page without some patterned paper on it. Well, except now, I can. ¬†I only used one piece of patterned paper on this page and that was just for the base of the layout. For me – that is unusual as I am not a mixed media person with the ability to jazz up a simple sheet of paper into an artistic creation!

Hello cl4

Instead, I used ephemera as my jumping point. Sometimes you just need to let the kit do the work for you – in this case, it was the Crate Paper Chasing Dreams Ephemera Pack that did the work for me.

The great thing about using an ephemera pack like this – it all just goes. The guess work is totally removed from the whole layout planning process and you can just play!

Hello cl3

To see how my page came together, I created this process video for you! Sit back and enjoy!

Butterfly dreams and Project Life/ Felicity Wilson

Hello! Felicity here today with a project using the February 2017 kit. Now, if you have a phobia of butterflies, look away! Tee hee.. no, seriously, these butterflies are ¬†so pretty. Tell me one person, who saw this sheet paper in the kit, from Crate Paper chasing dreams collection, who didn’t cut them out? Its hard not to right? So, I spent a l o t of time fussy cutting. My feet thanked me though, because I sat in the couch, all snug with my feet for a good few hours!

This layout turned out better than I expected. Its so pretty.

I didn’t do a lot of embellishments because it would conflict with the butterflies. Doesn’t mean I was tempted though. Of course layers under the photo don’t count! tee hee

I did add a few circle elements to carry that through from the photo of my daughter. That photo couldn’t be more perfect uh? My daughter had her first hair trim, shes nearly 2 and I was so worried she’d loose her curls, like most Mummy’s with a daughter with curly hair. But, guess what, it made it curlier. ¬†The hair dresser giggled because as her hair was drying, it just sprang up so quickly. Curls are staying girl!

Anyways… side tracked… I wanted a photo of the back of her hair, so in order to get her to ‘stand still’ for just 5 seconds, I told her to look at the wall with the magnifier glass… it worked I got my photo and more!

So when I was looking for photos to go with my butterflies, i could not go past this one. Couldn’t be more perfect!
I wasn’t real sure where to add my journaling, so I decided to tuck it in the top as a layer.

Before you go here’s a Project life spread using the February 2017 Project life kit.

Happy dreaming butterflies folks!

Hello Paris by Tarrah McLean

Happy Sunday Hip Kit fans!

It’s Tarrah McLean back with you and today I have a new layout to share using the amazing February 2017 Main and Add-On kits!

I have been blessed once with a trip to Paris a couple of years ago and I am super duper lucky to be going again in 7 weeks time! As soon as I saw that gorgeous Amour paper by Dear Lizzy I just knew that  I had to pull out a Paris photo!

I started out by cutting the geometric heart cut file from one of the pink patterned papers included in the February 2017 Main kit and backed it with that gorgeous Amour paper and then machine stitched around the outside. I used some foam tape to pop it up from the mint coloured background paper.

While creating this layout I was pulling out bits and pieces to embellish it with…I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the date on the globe sticker with the number 24 and then May and Wed really small…….THIS IS THE EXACT DAY WE ARE GOING TO PARIS!! We are getting the Eurostar across from England on this date! Can you believe that?! That sticker was made just for me and this layout!!

I love all the embellishments that refer to travel included in the February 2017 Hip Kits…they are just perfect for this layout! I also added one of those gorgeous fringed butterflies and a gold puffy heart by Maggie Holmes from the Chasing Dreams collection.

I absolutely love how this layout turned out and I hope I have inspired you to create some projects using some of your Hip Kits!?

Happy creating…see you next week!

Thursday Inspiration with Cara Vincens and Flora Monika Farkas

Hello Hip Kit fans! It’s another Thursday, and each week¬†design team members will be given a product, kit or idea to create with. We‚Äôll post them here to inspire you with different ways to use¬†the same thing.

¬†This week Cara and Fl√≥ra are going to show you creative ways to use washi! Fl√≥ra is scrapbooking and Cara is in her Traveller’s Notebook.

Flóra is up first:

This time I was without any idea, so I decided just to jump into the project and start.

@floramfarkas_washi_bunting_hip_kit

First I choose the papers and the gathered all the coordinating elements such as pink, black&white, yellow¬†embellishment. I really enjoy to create the huge cluster “column”. The February 2017 Hip Kit includes so many gorgeous stickers, die cuts and much more.

crate_paper_maggie_holmes_chasing_dreams_die_cut

crate_paper_chasing_dreams_stickers

When the cluster was ready I grabbed the Pink Paislee – Paige Evans Oh My Heart stickers book from the February 2017 Project Life Kit. In this book you can find a sheet of fun washi stripes. I adhered them on a piece of baker’s twine to create a cute bunting. The bunting gave me the idea to place my title in this way.

washi_tape_bunting

I really love the pretty and happy result! I suggest you sometimes go crazy with materials. You don’t need to save them because the next Hip Kit will come so soon! ūüėČ

Thanks for stopping by today! Flóra

Here are Cara’s ideas:

washi-times-3

I’m in my traveller’s notebook and I’ve got 3 different ways that I like to use washi to share with you. These washi strips are from the Paige Evans sticker book from Pink Paislee. They stick really well and are quite sturdy, so they can be really functional as well as pretty in your planner, which is great to know if your planner gets a lot of wear and tear from day to day.¬†This functionality is what this first tip is all about:

washi-1

1. Use washi to adhere only on the back of your tip-ins to keep the design of the front whole. The tip-in will stay in place but you don’t have to cover up any pretty designs on the front of your card.

washi-2.jpg

2. Washi makes a great base for a cluster. It helps ground the other elements that you will layer on top. This orange strip becomes part of the whole of the cluster, but without it as a base, the other items would seem lost. It gives the other elements a nice place to sit.

washi-3.jpg

3. Washi makes great tabs, so that you can easily find a page in your planner. The wider the washi, the easier it is to use, but here I’ve used a rather thin washi and it works just fine, you can easily see that blue tab and find the page.

This video walks you through my process as I go through each step, so grab a cuppa something warm, it’s a long one!

Happy Planning!

Let us know how you like to use washi in the comments!

From Moodboard to Layout | Laureen Wagener

Hi friends –

Laureen with you today and something very fun!
Today I will share a page that has been inspired by the beautiful March moodboard Tarrah created.

17021997_10155947036734408_2859226088945856291_n

The large Quilt in the moodboard immediatly caught my eye and I as soon as I saw that I was assigned to create a project based on the moodboard, I knew I had to create a Quilt design with paper for my layout.

lovelyweekendklein

I began searching Pinterest and found a Quilt made out of triangles, so that also covers a picture in the moodboard. I started by cutting almost all the papers from the Scrapbook kit into long strips and then cut them into a elongaded triangle.

IMG_3206

At first I thought I would use the quote pictured in the moodboard as my title but such a large one didn’t look right on the page design. So I just took inspiration out of the gold color of the title and used the gold glitter Thickers from Maggie Holmes and Crate Paper to form a part of my title.

IMG_3204

Adding a few embellishments from the Main kit and Embellishment kit clustered around my photo always helps with keeping the focus on the picture and drawing the eye to the center of my layout.
IMG_3205

As finishing touches I added a few embellishments from the same color family to some paper triangles.

IMG_3207

I hope I could inspire you in some way and I can’t wait to see how you interpret this moodboard!

Have a great day,

xo Laureen
