A trendy way to scrapbook heritage photos!

We are honoring our Mother’s here on the Hip Kit Club blog this week, and this is my contribution using the last of my March 2016 kits!

“Use a trendy color palette & modern motifs to jazz up vintage photos.”

She Never Knew by Kim Watson

To start this page I grabbed Shimmerz Paints from the March Color kit & Feburary Color Kits painting & dripping yellow & blue paint in areas on the page. A stencil I made using my cutting machine & pink paint on a sponge added further triangle texture.

The secondary title actually came from a journal card. The colors worked perfectly to add part of my green accent color. Bold pink circles are part of our exclusive papers from this month’s Main kit & March 2016 Paper Kit. Rough pen doodles around the edges add a little pizzazz as does the layering with the cute Basic Grey cork stickers.

The American Crafts cork alphas were perfect for my large title. Those were from the March 2016 Embellishment kit. Did you notice the lovely black texture stamping around the page? It is a uber cute stamp from Pinkfresh Studio, included in the color kit. Layered with gauze flowers from the Basic Grey Ephemera pack, the black punch is exactly what my page needed to finish it off. KimWatson+SheNeverKnew+HKC04

I really hope you have found this page inspiring enough to want to scrapbook a story from your Mom’s past, especially with Mother’s Day around the corner. Mixing the old with the new is a great way of updating my heritage albums, I urge you to try it too.

Thanks for stopping by, have a marvellous week!

Signs of spring | Christin Grønnslett

Hello everyone. Christin here today with a few step by step photos.  With all the nice colors I wanted to make a layout with lots of colors. I am often more modest with the numbers of colors I chose for a layout but here I wanted to use all the colors I found in the papers.  By the way, don’t you just love all the exclusive papers in the March Kit ???

christin gronnslett - vartegn 005.jpg

When I make a layout I usually start with my background, but today I started with the April cut file made by Kit Watson. I used the green and yellow Aqua Huez in the March Color Kit and just added more colors with a waterbrush (mist and peerless paper)

christin gronnslett - vartegn 001

Next was my background. I added lots of colors here too. I used a waterbrush to spread the colors – a mix of mists, Aqua Huez, pigment Izink and mists.  It’s fun to mix it all with a waterbrush.

christin gronnslett - vartegn 002

Often when I feel the colors are too busy I add a layer of heavy gesso. That really helps soften the page.

christin gronnslett - vartegn 003

Of course I ended up covering most of my background. When I start layering I always use a stapler to keep the layers together to leave room to add a few things here and there in between the layers and to give extra air and life to the page.

christin gronnslett - vartegn 004

And on top I added the lovely ampersand ampersand file.

christin gronnslett - vartegn 007.jpg

For my title I used the Basic Grey letters in the march 2016 Color kit and painted them with gold.

Funny Friends and A Project Life Insert!

Hey everyone! It’s Friendship Week and I’m here today sharing a layout I created using the last of my March 2016 Hip Kits, along with a Project Life insert using some of my favorite vacation photos and the new April 2016 Hip Kits!

First up I have a layout that I created celebrating my daughter and my nieces adorable and very comical friendship…

I used items from the March 2016 Hip Kits for this layout and started by layering a few leftover criss cross cut file pieces on top of some white card stock that I painted three yellow boxes on using the Shimmerz Crazy Daisy watercolor paint that’s available in the March 2016 Color KitI love how the yellow paint makes the striped criss cross cut files pop!

Next, I layered my photos on top of the Just Dream Fanstasy exclusive HKC patterned paper that was designed by our very own Kim Watson and adhered them to my page using some foam adhesive dots for a little extra dimension. I cut the speech bubble out of one of the journaling cards in the March 2016 Project Life Kit and used it for my journaling and added my title “Funny friends” using the Maggies Holmes Thickers and the “friends” sentiment from the BasicGrey Saturday Morning Cork Sticker Sheet (both available in the March 2016 Main Kit).

I made several different sized circles using some punches and the Just Dream Carefree patterned paper and placed them randomly around my page to mimic confetti. I also placed two of the Elle’s Studio Little Moments Die Cuts from the March 2016 Project Life Kit on one of my photos and in one of the confetti clusters for a pop of black and accented them with some of the BasicGrey enamel dots and black ink splatters.

Next up I have a Project Life insert that I created using the April 2016 Project Life Kit and photos from my recent wedding anniversary trip to Bora Bora to share with you!

I used my favorite photos from our trip that I edited in Photoshop Elements and several of the exclusive PL cards from the April 2016 Project Life Kit that were designed by Kim Watson and Kimberly Hutchison. I embellished the cards using items from the PL kit such as the My Mind’s Eye Wood Veneer Shapes, Enamel Dots, and some of the Shimelle Star Shine Phrase and Alphabet Stickers.

I used some Pinkfresh Studio items as well and I really like the dimension the Life Noted Epoxy Stickers give my spread without adding lots of bulk. I also added a few strips of the Amy Tangerine Better Together Washi Tape and criss-crossed it on top of a few of my photos for a fun twist.

I added the “GoSeeDo” acetate word phrase that’s also from Pinkfresh Studio and available in the April 2016 Main Kit and layered it on top of one of the 4×6 PL cards after I cut the card in half to fit into the 3×4 pocket and placed one of the My Mind’s Eye Wood Veneer Shape heart stickers in the “o”.

And here’s a look at the other side of my PL insert…

It was hard to narrow down the photos that I wanted to include in this insert since I took over 1,000 on our trip, but I’m also going to make a hardcover photo book for our coffee table so I managed to pick out the photos that I thought gave the best overview of our trip.

I kept the overall design of this side much like the other one and used a few of the Amy Tangerine Better Together rub-ons from the April 2016 Main Kit to embellish the PL cards  from the Project Life Kit and a couple of my photos.

I’ve been meaning to add these photos from our trip to my Project Life album for quite some time now and using the April 2016 Project Life Kit made it so easy to complete! Thanks so much for dropping by and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Project Life 2016 By Marie-Pierre Capistran

Hi everyone!

Today is my last post as a DT member for Hip kit Club. I am moving to a new country and I wouldn’t be possibly able to keep up with my assignments so I had to resign. This being said I’d like to take a moment to thank Kimberly from the bottom of my heart for giving me this amazing chance of being on the team, for trusting me, for being so so so generous and kind! I loved every single month creating with my Hip Kit Club kits and will miss getting my monthly dose of happy on my porch. 🙂 THANK YOU Kimberly!! xox

So now on to my project. 🙂

Left page:

I really love that there was lots of soft and happy colors this month in the cards from the Project Life kit.

Right page:

And also lots of alphas to mix up and cute embellishments in the Project Life kit, the Embellishment kit and the Main kit, as always. 🙂

Some of my favorite embellishments to use this months were the cork stickers by Basic Grey and the cute puffy stickers by Pinkfresh Studio. The two mixed together brought texture and color and that was just awesome! I added some stitching along the line of this 4×6 card that i cut up onto 2 3×4 cards. I love the chevron to guide the eye.

Look how I played with the words “friends” on this photo and “forever” on the next one. These two photos are side by side on my spread. I added a * and a heart on both pictures to tie them together since the alphas are not at all the same.

Repetition is always a good thing to get balance so I used more cork elements on my spread, oh and more stitching. 🙂

If you want to see more details of my spread, you can find them on my blog.

Goodbye to you all! It was awesome to be part of the Hip kit Club family for a while. 🙂

Not One, but Two | Ashley Horton

Hi everyone!  It’s Ashley, and I’m here today to share not just one layout, but two using the March 2016 Hip Kit & Add-On Kits!  That gives me a total of five for this month, and I could probably easily finish 5 other layouts with my kit and still have left overs!!  Too many goodies, and not enough time!  HA!  Here’s a look at my first layout, using the March Sketch, that you can find in the Hip Kit Member Forum on Facebook.

March 2016 Sketch

I decided to use the sketch as is, but amp it up with one of the Pinkfresh Studio patterned papers in the March 2016 Main Kit.  The pattern was originally at the top of the page, but I flipped it, so I could use the White space to add my photos and PL card from the March 2016 Project Life Kit.  I loved being able to still use a patterned paper for the background, without it overwhelming the photos and embellishments.

I layered some of the Elle’s Studio tags from the Project Life Kit with the Pink Fresh Studio Die Cut Shapes from the March 2016 Embellishment Kit, over the PL card for interest.  And I kept the title for my layout on the simple side, by adding the word “Loveliness” from the Pinkfresh Studio Thickers, also included in the March Embellishment Kit.  I also wanted to add some more dimension to the pattern at the bottom of the page, so I mixed in some of the Pinkfresh Studio puffy stickers and Die Cut Shapes.

And I’m sure you can quote me on saying this many times, but I love how you can create so many layouts from the Hip Kits that have totally different looks.  The second layout I’m sharing, uses some of the exclusive patterned papers in the March 2016 Main Kit and March 2016 Paper Add-On Kit, designed by Kim Watson.  I also enlarged one of the March cut files designed by Nicole Nowosad.

Thank My Lucky Stars

Both of the patterned papers used for the background and die cut, were designed by Kim.  I loved the look of the darker Blue on the Teal background.  And I actually limited my color scheme to about 95% of those two colors, adding in a touch of Yellow and Black.  The Basic Grey enamel dots included in the March Project Life Kit were the perfect embellishments to add to the diamond shapes on the background paper.  I mixed the different sizes and alternated the colors of the enamel dots.

Thank My Lucky Stars1

I placed my photo at the top of the large title and clustered several embellishments around it, to draw your eye.  And I love the contrast of the Red in the photo, against the color scheme of the layout.  I added another embellishment cluster at the bottom of the layout, to balance the photo and embellishments at the top of the page.

Thank My Lucky Stars2

I had so much fun creating with the March Hip Kits, and now I’m looking forward to working with the April 2016 Hip Kit & Add-On Kits!!  They should be arriving any day now!  Make sure you visit the Hip Kit Club website to check them out!

Have you tried mixing paper strips & watercolors?

Digging into my March Hip kits has been so much fun for me. It is a RIOT of color, patterns & textures, INSPIRING the direction I took with this page.

Make this Life  Sweeter than Fiction by Kim Watson

Kim Watson+Make this Life Sweet+HKC01

Step one:

Grab a watercolor brush, Shimmerz Paints as found in the March color kit add-on, and any other color you would like to add. With BOLD brush strokes, wash color diagonally across your page. I chose yellow, AQUA & pink to compliment the Pinkfresh Studio papers.

Kim Watson+Make this Life Sweet+HKC02

Step two:

Fussy cut some of the patterned stripes from the Pinkfresh paper found in the March main kit & March paper add-on kit . I chose TONAL shades but you can use any combination you desire. Laying them in different positions from each other on their complimenting paint stripe really works the diagonal design. Machine stitching a VARIETY of stitches, adds super texture & interest. This combination of techniques is a great way to freshen up any page design.

Kim Watson+Make this Life Sweet+HKC03

Step three:

Using a 4×6″ PL card from the March PL kit add-on, vellum, ephemera from Pinkfresh Studio, I layered the 4 small PHOTOS; creating a fun collage which I placed in a central position. A tab & sweet little bird sticker was all that was needed for PERFECT balance.

Kim Watson+Make this Life Sweet+HKC04

Step four:

Start layering die-cut ephemera as found in the March Main kit & March Embellishment add-on kit & grow your own flower border strip. Mix substrates and get CREATIVE!! Foam adhesive lift shapes off the page, adding DIMENSION, puffy stickers & enamel dots add a little ‘sparkle’ to the center of the flowers. Notice how the fun the word ‘MAKE’ became the first word in the conversational title?

Kim Watson+Make this Life Sweet+HKC05

Step five:

Use a few of the super funky journal strip STICKER strips from Pinkfresh Studio, found in the March PL kit add-on, as your journaling. I love how the WATERCOLOR finish works so well with the painted background!

Kim Watson+Make this Life Sweet+HKC06

I really hope you have enjoyed following my process. I am so happy with the results…fun, fresh & perfect for spring!! Remember to stop by the Hip Kit Club Facebook page,  Hip Kit Club blog, and Pinterest page daily, for amazing ideas and inspiration to make the most of your monthly Hip kits.

Until next week, have a wonderful Monday!!

A Spring Story | Missy Whidden

Happy Thursday, friends!  Missy back with you, and I have another Springy layout to share using the 2016 March Hip Kits!  I used one of Nicole’s flower cut files from this month’s set, and I enlarged the flower and then duplicated it in several different sizes.  I liked the idea of nesting the flowers and having my photo right in the middle.  I wound up framing the photo with the smallest flower cut, and I love how it turned out!  I used all exclusive papers for this, which are all included in the Main Kit and Paper Kit.  I coated the background paper with a lot of white gesso and white acrylic paint.  I used several Shimmerz products including the yellow Aqua Huez from this month’s Color Kit as well as a few products from past Color Kits.  I got really messy and artsy with the paints, and I love how it looks with the flowers on top of it!
A Spring Story
I used lots of thread from my stash to add extra pops of color and texture around the photo.  I also used several of the Basic Grey flowers from the Embellishment Kit as well as some of the puffy sequin stickers and wood veneer hearts from Pinkfresh Studio.  And I did run the background through my sewing machine…very carefully!  I was impressed with how I was able to stitch around those petals 🙂
A Spring Story2
Aren’t those Basic Grey flowers so bright and pretty?  They are perfect for a Spring layout.  I love the bright green leaves.  They are a perfect match to the bright green Thickers!
A Spring Story3
I paired up the green Thickers with the silver glitter Pinkfresh Studio script words from the Embellishment Kit to create my title.  I love the bright pop of color from that green!
A Spring Story1
Here’s one more close-up of the cut file and mixed media work.  I love this royal blue color.  I’m so glad it’s becoming popular in newer release these days…it’s just so pretty!
A Spring Story4
If you’d like to see how I created this background and built this layout, be sure to check out my process video.  I hope you draw some inspiration from it!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Thank My Lucky Stars | March 2016 | Michelle Whorwood

Hi Hip Kit Fans,

I have one more layout to share with you using the March 2016 Hip Kits.  This has yet again been one of my favourite kit months.  The cool greens mixed in with the blues, and hints of coral were perfect for my photos of my three kids posing on their first day of school for the year – even if their posing was less than perfect.

I have incorporated the fantastic cut file designed by Nicole Nowosad as my title and the little leaf branch was perfect for the Bird die cut from Basic Grey.

Thank my lucky Stars

Doer | Adrienne Alvis

Hello and happy Tuesday, everyone! I’m here today with a layout I created using the March 2016 Hip Kits. My daughter pulled her first tooth all by herself the other day and she was so thrilled that I knew I wanted to capture her excitement on a layout! I was really inspired by the green color of her shirt and used items from the March 2016 Hip Kits that matched and coordinated with that gorgeous green hue.

I started by using a few of the Pinkfresh Studio Colorblock Wood Stickers from the Felicity Collection and some leftover acrylic dots from a past HKC kit and scattered them around the graphic at the top of the Pinkfresh Studio patterned paper that I chose to use as the background paper for my page.

I placed several of the Pinkfresh Studio Felicity Collection Die Cut pieces to the right of my photo and layered a few pieces of patterned paper from the March 2016 Paper Kit (including that beautiful striped paper that’s an HKC exclusive designed by our very own Kim Watson!) under the photo of my daughter.

I thought the sentiment die cut piece from Pinkfresh Studio (available in the March 2016 Embellishment Kit) was perfect for this page since my daughter was a little scared to pull her own tooth! I also backed the “Doer” vellum piece from BasicGrey with a white piece of card stock so it would stand out better on my page.

I just love how well the exclusive papers coordinate with the contents of the March 2016 Hip Kits! They’re so bright and fresh and will work with any spring project you create! Thanks for stopping by this morning and I hope you have a lovely afternoon!
