Let’s Get Painty: Layout Influenced by Art | Jessica Fabiano

Hello friends. Did you know that I love art? I am sure that some of you feel the same. During my studies at university I focused on abstract paintings and I sometimes let my love for art influence the way I scrap. Have you heard of informalism (Art Informel) or Abstract Expressionism? Perhaps you’d like artists like Bernhard Schulze, Michel Keck, or Britt Bass Turner to inspire you to pull out your paints and get started, too – because that’s what they do with me. Here’s the layout I created for today:

The February 2017 Hip Kits are stuffed with gorgeous colors, patterns and a BUNCH of embellishment. I love paper  – but embellishment is what makes me roll. As you can see, I started off creating a bold painty background. The color add on of this month comes with the Shimmerz Paints Acritonez acrylic colors (magenta, white, blue). I mixed the white and magenta to achieve the pale pink look on the left side but added some red color to the magenta for the darker shades on the right side. This creates depth and interest. I tried not to let the colors blend as they were still wet on my surface – this is just a preference; blending makes it softer and more natural, not blending makes it bolder. I also prefer boldness in abstract art. It looks very easy but it requires a lot of practicing – I find that I often blend the colors more than I want to. I still have lots of room for improvement after so many years!

Once my color was dry, I added white sandy texture paste using the gorgeous color add on stencil. Did you check the February downloads? Zinia’s gorgeous heart cut file was so much fun to use and matched the stencil perfectly. I cut it using a pale pink sheet of paper from the cardstock add on. I also added some pink mist on top of the heart to give it more depth. To make it a bit more interesting I backed random sections of the heart with Maggie Holmes’s Chasing Dreams paper. Then I added in the fun embellishments mainly from the Oh My Heart Puffy Stickers by Pink Paislee (Paige Evans) and also some of the Shimelle wood buttons. So so cute!

I love those dynamical cyrcles that we can often find in abstract paintings – I used several shades of pink for this section of the layout. I also added a golden puffy fabric heart and a little phrase sticker.

I love how the mint green pops on top of the pale pink. Those colors make me happy!

List of products I used for this layout:

  • Paper “Keepsake” – Crate Paper/Maggie Holmes (Chasing Dreams) (Main Kit).
  • Wood Buttons – Shimelle (Little by Little)  (Main Kit).
  • Chipboard Sticker – Crate Paper/Maggie Holmes (Chasing Dreams) (Main Kit).
  • Golden fabric puffy hearts – Maggie Holmes (Chasing Dreams)  (Main Kit).

Do what you Love | Jana McCarthy

Hi everyone, Jana here with a new Layout for you. I got my February Kits last week and i took a picture and i scrapped it with the January Kits… because, why not?!
I went a bit Element crazy here and i added so many things to my page…

I used a lot of the exclusive DieCuts and Printables here. Kim Watson made an awesome Job, again! Love how everything worked so well together. I colored the Heart from the WoodVeneer Piece with the Texture Paste from Heidi Swapp (included in the Color AddOn Kit)

I love the black Vellum Hearts. They gives a perfect little touch!

The Picture is a bit small in that massive Element Cluster, i know! But i totally love it!
Are your scrapping pictures from your HappyMail or your Kits?

I had so much fun creating this Layout and i can´t wait to get my first page with the new Kits done! Everything i waiting on my table… eeek!

Monochromatic Layout | Missy Whidden

It’s Monday again…woo hoo!  Missy here again to share another layout using the beautiful 2017 January Hip Kits.  I began this page by going through all the embellishments that I hadn’t used yet.  I noticed I hadn’t used those fun metallic Heidi Swapp chipboard frames from the Main Kit yet.  I pulled three of them out and arranged them on the Fountain cardstock from the Cardstock Kit.  I liked the way that looked with my photo layered on top, so I went with it.  I also pulled out all the pieces that were either blue, mint, aqua or green and decided to go with a monochromatic color scheme.  I jazzed up the background with some white gesso.  I used some of the Teal Heidi Swapp Texture Paste from the Color Kit.  I watered it down on some plastic packaging and then added in some of the Shimmerz Jeni B Bleu Vibez from the May Color Kit.
I created a lot of dimension here because of the thickness of the frames and the layering.  I added some adhesive foam under that blue camera sticker to make it even with the frames.  I combined some of the Hazelwood stickers from the Project Life Kit and rub-ons from the Main Kit with some of the exclusive Hip Kit die cut flowers from the Embellishment Kit and wood veneer pieces.  I colored the fabric Thickers with some Shimmerz and a gelato.
I love how these frames look on the watercolor background.  I did some machine stitching through each one and then at the bottom and top of the design with some light blue thread.  My journaling fit nicely to the right of the bottom frame.
I love this metallic gold!  I added some Gold Heidi Swapp Color Shine to echo the frames.  That beautiful butterfly sticker is from the Hazelwood sticker sheet, and I added some navy blue thread under it.
Here you can see more of the dimension.  The frames automatically create it, and it’s awesome.  I made sure they were glued down well on the mixed media background.  I layered in more wood veneer, stickers, cut aparts and rub-ons here.
Here’s one last close-up of the top area.  I love these colors together.  It’s fun to limit your color scheme sometimes and see what you can come up with!
Here’s my process video if you’d like to watch how I put this layout together.  I hope you enjoy and are inspired!

Thanks so much for stopping by, and have a great day!

Like What?! Colorful Layout | Jessica Fabiano

Yeeeah so you know how it is, sometimes there’s something you experience or realize – or hear, or do, or say, or…and all you have left to say is: Like what?! Geez! Too long a story, anyway, let’s get back to the layout. (There’s also a process video below).

I am sure some of you know how I work by now. I need colors. Colors make me smile- there’s barely a pastel layout that I made that I truly truly love, colors just speak to my heart. But I don’t want to neglect the pretty papers that we got, so I decided to use a lot more patterned paper than I usually do, that’s why I punched out some patterns with a circle-punch and glued them down randomly. Did you see the turquoise roses? I made them using the Heidi Swapp teal metallic paste that’s included in the color kit. I mixed the paste with turquoise acrylics and went over a rose-stencil using a palette knife – then I cut it out and yay! My own rose-ephemera!

I also scribbled in some gelato circles – really messily and not really caring about the look; I find that that’s the kind of look I want. Did you see? I colored in the fabric thickers from the embellishment kit! Careful, random owl-eyes in the next picture. (O_O).

We know details have a lot of power! I used the tiny washi strips almost on top of each other or next to each other to enhance their effect! Love those, they were a lot of fun to use. I also used some lime and bubble gum pink colored homemade mists – my newest passion: DIY mists

Have a look at my process video to watch how I created this layout:

And here’s a list of the products I used:

  • “Frolic” paper strip, exclusively designed by Kimberly (main kit)
  • Project Life foiled frames (main kit)
  • Vellum heart stickers exclusively designed by Kim (embellishment kit)
  • DIY Fabric Thickers (Embellishment kit)
  • Heidi Swapp Structure Paste (Color Kit)
  • Colored Cardstock (Cardstock Kit)

Thanks for joining me today,

Using Rub-Ons and Documenting January 2017 | Adrienne Alvis

Hello, Hip Kit Club fans! It’s Friday and I have two projects to share with you as we head into the weekend!

First up, I have my Project Life spread for January 2017 that I created using items from the January 2017 Project Life Kit

I’m going to continue to use a 9×12 album for my spreads this year and I’m also sticking to a monthly documenting schedule. I printed my photos off from my home computer and placed them in the various 3×4 slots to begin my process.

I used several of the HKC exclusive Project Life cards from the January 2017 Project Life Kit and layered a few of the 1 Canoe 2 Hazelwood Gold Foiled Icon stickers on a few of my photos to add some dimension without adding a lot of bulk to the pockets.

I also layered a few of the Pink Paislee Moonstruck ephemera pieces (available in the January 2017 Main Kit) on a couple of the journaling cards and layered some puffy stickers on top of them. I really love the colors of the journaling cards this month, don’t you?

I kept the right side of my spread cohesive with the left by using the same color scheme and by placing my embellishments on the journaling cards in a visually balanced design.

And here’s a look at my full spread for January 2017…

Next up, I have a layout that I created using the January 2017 Hip Kits to share…

I was really inspired by the lovely butterfly rub-ons from 1 Canoe 2, but I wanted them to look more dimensional on my layout so I placed them on a piece of vellum and fussy-cut them out. I also carefully bent their wings up a bit so they would look as if they were fluttering across my page.

I also used the 6×6 stencil from Carta Bella and the Heidi Swapp Metallic Texture Paste in Teal from the January 2017 Color Kit to create the houndstooth design on the background patterned paper from 1 Canoe 2.

I layered lots of the ephemera pieces from the Pink Paislee Moonstruck collection around my photo and placed several of the 1 Canoe 2 Hazelwood Printed Cork Shape pieces (available in the January 2017 Project Life Kit) on my page for a little color and texture contrast.

Be sure and check out the process video for this layout below…

Thanks so much for stopping by today and I hope you have a great weekend!

Butterfly Dreamin’ | Raquel Bowman

Hey everyone, Raquel Bowman here today with a new layout using the beautiful January kits and exclusive cut files. This week my baby girl had her first day of Kinder. This is quite a milestone event here in Aus so I was itching to get this photo documented. I was planning on adding a lot of journaling to the layout documenting all the ‘mummy feels’ however, once I started playing with the products I sort of ran out of room! Luckily, being a Mummarazzi I took plenty of photos so I will create another layout to contain the thoughts and feelings behind this special day.

To create this layout I made a feature of the gorgeous January exclusive butterfly cut file. I just loved this cut file as soon as I saw it and thought it was the perfect one for this story. I actually cut this file twice – once on vellum and once on white card stock from the card stock add on. I then traced the design onto the Pink Paislee patterned paper and hand cut around it. I could have cut the outline of the file on my silhouette but I added it as an afterthought.

To add a beautiful touch of dimension I stitched them together at the centre of the butterflies and folded the areas of the wings inwards. I love the softness this brings and the pops of pink and coral coming through the wings of the butterflies.

For the title of this page I used the exclusive veneer piece from the Main Kit and backed the ‘dreams’ part of it with the same Pink Paislee Moonstruck paper that I used behind the butterfly cut file.

To embellish the page I used a combination of products. I just love the Hazelwood collection by American Crafts that is featured in these kits. I included some of the stickers and also the butterfly rub ons. I placed the rub ons onto plain card stock and then fussy cut them out to turn them into die cuts.

There was an exclusive paper that had the most beautiful florals. I fussy cut those out and placed them either side of the photo. Of course I had to add some more butterflies and hearts to the embellishment clusters too.

I added two patterned papers behind the photo and a doily from my stash. The papers help tie in that blue and pink colour palette. I also added strips down the side of the whole layout, just to help balance the page a little. It is very busy compared to my usual style. followyourdreams-4

To finish the page I added a touch of Heidi Swapp Colour Shine. I hope this page has inspired you to get creating with your January kits and the cut files. followyourdreams-6

Diagonal Design with Missy Whidden

Hey, friends!  Happy Monday 🙂  Missy here with a new layout featuring the 2017 January Hip Kits.  Aren’t they so beautiful?  I wanted to create a fun and unique color scheme for my page, so I decided on the pink and coral watercolor paper from Pink Paislee Moonstruck and paired it with the two blue and white exclusive papers.  All of these papers are in the Main Kit & Paper Kit.  I created vertical strips to make a base for my photo and embellishments, and then I decided to go diagonal with the design.  I started with my photo in the upper right area and worked my way down to the lower left corner with the embellishments and title.  I used some white gesso on the background before coming in with some of the Heidi Swapp Teal Texture Paste from the Color Kit and some Shimmerz Jeni B Bleu Vibez.  I mixed and matched a lot of the embellishments, and I love how it all turned out.
I loved adding some blue watercolor effects to this beautiful patterned paper.  I used the packaging technique first with the Texture Paste by watering it down.  It created a really soft blue look, and to darken it up a bit,  I added the Shimmerz.  I also added in some pink Shimmerz from my stash and added a little bit of a red gelato to get the right pink shade.  I used the HAPPY letters from the exclusive die cut pack and paired it with some of the One Canoe Two butterfly rub-ons and stickers as well as a few of the exclusive wood veneers from the Main Kit.
I did use the stencil from the Color Kit with the Texture Paste.  I used a brush to apply it instead of a palette knife, and I like the subtle shapes I got.  I printed my journaling on my computer and glued it to this label sticker from One Canoe Two.  I added one of the cute metal clips and added foam under it for some dimension.  I fussy cut that cute flower from one of the 4×6 Project Life cards and added a bit of blue watercolor to it.  I finished off this area with one of the exclusive cut apart phrase pieces and a Moonstruck puffy sticker.
I fussy cut these pretty flowers from one of the exclusive patterned papers and added some blue watercolor to them to jazz them up a bit.  I added some tangled thread under them as well as an exclusive flower die cut and wood veneer.
I gave the butterfly rub-ons dimension by applying them to some scrap cardstock and cutting them out.  All I had to do was add a dot of glue to the centers so I could bend up the wings.  I also punched a few of the blue circles from the patterned paper I used on the left side to bring in more of that color on the right.
Here’s a look at the title area.  I love how it turned out!  I combined some of the Moonstruck pieces here with the white puffy alpha stickers from Studio Calico.  I also stitched through HAPPY for some added interest and detail.  I just love those butterflies!
Here’s my process video if you’d like to check it out.  I hope you are inspired to try something fun!

Thank you so much for stopping by!  Have a fabulous scrappy week!

All Smiles | Tiffany Medina

Hey everyone! Tiffany here with a project using my December Hip Kits. This is another one of those Project Life spreads in my 12×12 spiral scrapbook. I’ve taken a liking to doing my PL spreads this way and honestly don’t miss the pocket pages at all. I don’t know what it is, but I have a seriously aversion to the pocket pages when it comes to a PL style album. I guess it’s cause I feel a bit restricted when making my layout. I like the effect of things overlapping each other.

Anyway, I worked in my 12×12 scrapbook. Now, I’m using this scrapbook to house all of my favorite things–I’m calling it “My Favorite Things” album–and am using some of my favorite photos that I’ve taken over the years. My aim is for this album to be light and fun, and not something that I need to constantly update but instead work in whenever I want.

So I used up the remaining PL cards I had from the December Kit, along with cards I made from the papers in the Main kit. I used two papers from the Pink Paislee Take Me Away collection: the grid side from paper #22 and both sides from paper #4. I played around with the position of the cards until I found a really nice balance in color before I began laying out my photos.

For the photos, I stuck with the ones that had a lilac purple hue to them because I felt they matched the colors of this kit better. All of my cards are roughly 2×2 in size, which is a perfect fit to place them on the cards and layer them over paper. All of the photos are matted with either the lilac cardstock from American Crafts that came in the Cardstock add-on or that Take Me Away #4 paper.

In the top row, I use two 3×4 cards and a 4×6 card. The first is the Hello card from the PL kit. The next is one of the Take Me Away #4 paper cards I made. I put one of my favorite feet photos on this card and embellished it with one of the phrases from the cut apart sheet included in the PL kit, layered on top of a strip of the aqua glitter tape from the Embellishment kit that I cut into a banner. I then place one of the Heidi Swapp Gold Puffy hexagon stickers from the PL kit and a pink Carta Bella enamel dot from the Embellishment kit to accent the banner off.

For the next card, I used the backside of the Take Me Away #4 as my base. I then took the Maggie Holmes Blossom paper from the Bloom collection, and cut out a few of the plus signs. I used them as X’s down the left side of the card. They sort of resemble colorful bandages. I then took the “Hello You” tag from the Take Me Away ephemera pack from the Main kit and placed it crookedly on the card. I layered my favorite photo of my dad at an angle on top, then embellished the whole thing with butterflies I punched out of the #4 paper and a few of the Carta Bella enamel dots. I love the ombre-ish effect the butterflies give to this card!

For the second row, I use four 3×4 cards. The first card is the grid side of the Take Me Away #22 paper. I simply place my photo matted on the lilac cardstock in the center and used one of the HKC exclusive arrow wood veneers along with one of the My Mind’s Eye gold acrylic bows to frame it. I did the exact same thing for the forth card in this row, in order to keep the balance.

The second and third card act as my journaling and title cards. I used that list card from the PL kit to list what each photo I used on this spread represents. I just covered the “Moments I don’t Want to Forget” title with one of the phrases from the cut apart sheet that reads “Just Because…” I also tucked the Details tab from the HKC exclusive die cut ephemera pack behind the car at the top. For my title card, I used the Amy Tangerine white foam phrase thickers to read “All Smiles” on top of a card I made from the #4 Take Me Away paper. I embellished this card with a few more of those butterflies I punched out of the same paper.

In the last row, I have one 4×6 card and two 3×4 cards. For the 4×6 card, I used the backside of the #4 Take Me Away paper to mirror the 4×6 card in the top row. I took the “#LoveYa” tag from the Take Me Away ephemera pack and cut it in half to use the top part tucked behind my photo. I placed it down on an angle on the left. I then took the craft jar ephemera piece from the same pack and placed it on the right. Again, I embellished the card with those pretty ombre butterflies I punched out, with a few of the Carta Bella enamel dots.

The 3×4 card next to it was from the PL kit and it reads “Just Keepin’ It Real.” And the final 3×4 card is the grid side of the #22 paper. I used the “#LoveYa” part of the tag as a tab coming from behind the photo I placed in the center of the card. I repeated the aqua glitter tape banner underneath the photo with a phrase cut apart piece layered on top that reads “Made Me Smile.” I accented it with a gold camera puffy sticker from Heidi Swapp. Repeating little accents like this really help to balance out a spread and I love how this one came out!

Sweet Little 6 – BEA Valint

Hey Hip Kit Club fans! It’s so awesome to be here to share with you a layout that I have created with the lovely and colorful December Kits.

I wanted to document this cute photo of my little daughter taken at a dance class. I planed to create this layout so colorful and happy as her beautiful smile in the picture.

I used white cardstock as my base and added some colored texture paste behind my photo. To do this I mixed mint Heidi Swapp mist  with white structure paste, I grabbed my stencil from the December Color Kit and placed it on my layout. Then I grabbed my palette knife loaded with the colored structure paste and spread it across the top of my stencil. Once done I pulled up my stencil and allowed the cardstock to dry.

On the right side of my page I decided to layer some colorful pieces of patterned paper. To do this I trimmed some Take Me Away papers and Echo Paper, then layered them with some pieces of ephemera using foam dots.

I created my title with mixing and matching the letter stickers from the Kits, and arranged them vertical on my layout.

Can’t resist to add the cute Maggie Holmes tassels and acrylic shapes to my page, I mixed them with the Pink Paislee sequins and bow them to a tag. Although it looks like a lot of work, I promise you that taking the photos of the finished pages and writing up this post took me longer! 🙂

I hope I’ve given you some inspiration on how to use the lovely items and papers from the December Kits.

Happy crafting! BEA
